My Backstory
A Little Background Info...
Sometime back in the 1980s, my family got their first computer—a Texas Instrument that (at the time) was “state-of-the-art.” As we adjusted to the new technology, my father would constantly yell, “Laura!” and I would come running to help him do whatever he needed on his new “toy.” I was always good at figuring out technology, so I was the “expert” in my house. From there, I was hooked. I loved helping my Dad, and I loved computers!
In high school and college, I always enjoyed working on the computer. I started off college majoring in Accounting, but as I started to take some IT classes, I realized I enjoyed programming. In my senior year, I decided I wanted to double major. I stayed one extra semester and summer to complete my double major in Computer Information Systems. I loved all my IT classes—even more than my Accounting classes—but even then, it didn’t dawn on me that I should pursue a career in it.
Fast forward to my early 20s. After torturing myself as a CPA for four years, the IT department at my company had an opening. I knew from watching the programmer doing her job that I could do it, too. I applied for the job. I still remember the skeptical look I got from the IT management., but I convinced them (and my husband) that this was the job for me. I spent the next 8 years designing finance applications that helped my co-workers do their jobs more efficiently. I loved working one-on-one and in small groups building web applications for customers and employees.
Nowadays, I am at a new place in my life. I have raised my child, and I want to go back to helping people. And that is where you come in!
Laura Simpson
Small /Medium business website designer based in the Raleigh / Durham area.
I believe your website should be working for you - generating leads and putting you in front of the people who are looking for what you offer.
How I develop and design small business websites.
When my clients first approach me, they are usually worried about their website looking out of date, or they are totally overwhelmed with technology and have no desire to maintain their website themselves. They want (and need) help, but they aren’t running a huge corporation. They own a small business, and they never dreamed of hiring a web developer to do their website.
I’ve found this mindset leads to stagnation and keeps small businesses from moving forward and growing. All the time and energy they’re spending maintaining a DIY website could be spent with their family or could be devoted to doing their core business. I’m here to take the stress and effort off your plate.
The hardest part of the process is the prep work. I devote as much time as I can to gathering crucial details from my client: what exactly they do and what information they want to convey on their website. I do research on their competitors and ask a lot of questions so they get an idea of what to say. If needed, I refer them to graphic designers and copyeditors to make sure the finished product looks spectacular.
The most rewarding part of my work is when a client sees their website “live” for the first time. For many of them, this is their second website after struggling to use a DIY website builder. When they see how clean and eye-catching their website is, they are stunned and so happy!
